Eco Flight: Flight Across America

2023 Water in the West

EcoFlight-fix-700x467bw.jpg

In April of 2023, I embarked on a four-day journey with EcoFlight, a non-profit that educates and advocates for the protection of remaining wild lands and wildlife habitats using small aircraft. Every year, they host Flight Across America, a program for eight undergraduates to learn about a specific environmental issue.

This year we focused on Water in the West and had the opportunity to see the Green River, the Colorado River, the Grand Canyon, the Rio Grande, and various  confluences from the air while meeting with local experts on the ground to get a fuller understanding of the water crisis. We also met with members of the press along the way to share our experience and help educate the local communities via journalism.

EcoFlight Gives a New Perspective on Conservation

Final Presentation

Along with two other students, and sandwiched between two keynote speakers who are experts in the fields of sustainability, journalism, and water issues, I spoke briefly about our journey and the importance of the aerial perspective.

EcoFlight educates and advocates for the protection of remaining wild lands and wildlife habitat using small aircraft. The aerial perspective and our educational programs encourage an environmental stewardship ethic among citizens of all ages.

EcoFlight’s call to action is to work with all sides of an issue, the plane providing a platform for conversation to happen in order to find solutions. The aerial perspective and our ability to connect people is used to help build bridges between current conflicting viewpoints, and as a tool to help Americans find common ground, bringing tribes, partisan alliances, and faith-based groups together.
